Athens without Sparta? Europe’s Security Burden in a Post-Atlantic Order

In this article, Dr. Konstantinos Tsetsos, Head of Foresight at the Metis Institute for Foresight and Strategy at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich, examines what European security looks like when U.S. strategic guarantees can no longer be taken for granted. The article identifies four structural challenges confronting Europe: stressed transatlantic cohesion, fragmented democratic integration, accelerating systemic rivalry with China and Russia, and declining societal legitimacy for rising security costs.
