Captain (Dr.) Gurpreet S Khurana, a serving Indian Navy officer, is a missile warfare specialist and ship’s diver with nearly 30 years of commissioned service. He has commanded two warships, including INS Tarmugli, and held key operational and staff roles. A prolific maritime scholar, he has authored over 50 papers on maritime strategy, law, and China’s naval rise. He contributed to major naval doctrinal documents, including the Indian Maritime Doctrine 2009, earning the naval chief’s commendation. Credited with pioneering the term “Indo-Pacific” in geopolitical discourse, he has authored three books and co-edited eleven more. From 2014–2019, he was Executive Director of the National Maritime Foundation. He represented India at regional maritime forums and has lectured extensively in India and abroad. Currently, he heads the Navy’s Centre on China Maritime Studies and is a visiting professor at the Naval War College, Goa.
