India’s nuclear deterrence policy occupies a distinctive position in the global order, shaped by moral principles, security challenges, and technological change. Rooted in a history of colonialism and evolving regional threats, India balances restraint with strategic necessity.
It advocates universal, non-discriminatory disarmament while rejecting treaties like the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty as discriminatory. Its doctrine of Credible Minimum Deterrence and No First Use underscores restraint, reinforced by civilian oversight and a functional nuclear triad, including INS Arihant, ensuring second-strike capability while promoting regional stability and responsible nuclear stewardship.
