Myanmar’s December 2025 Phased Elections: Context, Motivation’s and Risks
By PM Hebilkar, Member to CNSS Council.
Myanmar’s December 2025 phased elections are designed not to restore democracy, but to reinforce military dominance under the 2008 Constitution. Despite the façade of constitutional order, the junta faces resistance from PDFs, EAOs, and a nationwide legitimacy crisis.
With Min Aung Hlaing seeking political survival, the elections exclude conflict zones, restrict opposition, and manipulate participation. China and Russia back the process, while Western nations reject it, deepening geopolitical divides. As Myanmar’s civil war intensifies and humanitarian conditions worsen, these elections risk entrenching instability rather than resolving it.
