National Security Education in India: A Framework for Development

By Dr. Dheeraj Paramesha Chaya, Non-Resident Visiting Fellow, CNSS

India’s approach to National Security Studies (NSS) requires a fundamental reimagining—one that moves beyond borrowed theoretical models and reflects the country’s unique strategic realities. In this article, Dr. Dheeraj Paramesha Chaya draws insights from the experiences of the US, UK, Israel, and Pakistan to show how national security education can be better aligned with India’s long-term interests. He calls for the development of an indigenous NSS ecosystem rooted in critical inquiry, indigenous epistemologies, and strategic relevance.

The article underscores the importance of developing a coherent definition of national security in the Indian context and building academic programs that not only inform policy but also elevate public understanding. With a dual emphasis on global competitiveness and local applicability, Dr. Chaya argues for combining elements of the British and Israeli models—promoting both independent academic thinking and strategic alignment with national objectives. This contribution offers a timely roadmap for Indian academia to play a more meaningful role in shaping the country’s security discourse.
