Wartime Energy Security for India – Tactical Actions
India’s Wartime Energy Security: Strategic Actions for Resilience
As India navigates an unprecedented wartime scenario since April 22, 2025, energy security has emerged as a cornerstone of national resilience. With over 85% crude oil and 50% gas and LPG import dependency, ensuring uninterrupted energy flow is vital for both defence operations and economic stability.
Diversified Import Strategy India must optimize term contracts for crude oil, natural gas, and LPG while actively sourcing from the spot market. Strategic partnerships, especially with the US, are crucial for stable supply chains.
Maritime and Infrastructure Security Surveillance of critical maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz and Strait of Malacca is essential. The Indian Navy, in collaboration with allies, plays a pivotal role in securing these chokepoints.
Fortifying Energy Infrastructure
Oil refineries, coal mines, and solar plants should be protected with anti-drone shielding, camouflage, and reinforced enclosures.
Pipeline networks and power transmission lines must be placed under high surveillance.
Fuel Supply Continuity Power plants must secure alternate fuel sources and maintain raw material supply lines at all costs. Scheduled maintenance may be deferred to ensure continuous operation.
Strategic Reserves and Storage
Fill strategic petroleum reserves in Mangalore, Padur, and Vizag.
Maximize storage in both public and private refineries.
Utilize IEA reserves in emergencies.
Resource Mobilization and Civil Support
Engage NGOs and Civil Defence forces for non-skilled and surveillance tasks.
Avoid passing costs to consumers; instead, explore innovative funding mechanisms.
